Blue Formation 2

© 2007 art101.com

Here's an image of Blue Formation floating over a planet which orbits a binary star system. Star 1 is a cool blue giant... way bigger than our sun. Star 2 is a yellow dwarf... an incredibly dense hot star that's about the size of our little Earth. Star 2 orbits star 1 every 30 hours or so, dragging this mountainous little world along with it. This planet's proximity to its parent stars sculpts its surface with tidal forces we can't begin to imagine.

It's also very, very cold here. It's so cold that the mountains are coated in frozen methane, ammonia, carbon dioxide, a little water ice, and several other exotic chemical compounds... including some interesting amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of life.

It's very unlikely that life as we know it will ever emerge here, but it's an interesting place to look for clues about how life evolves.
