What Christmas Is
A Modern Carol

Ask anyone what Christmas is –
The answer could be anything
From Jesus’ birth to Peace on Earth
To just a day for sleeping in.

It matters not what Santa brings,
The toys, the joy, the bills, the bling;

The children know and carols sing
That Christmas is a light within.

In every life, the world will spin
From dark to light to dark again.
And through it all, we rise, we fall,
And from our endings, we begin.

And in the longest, darkest night
Is born the spark that warms to light.

A baby’s cry, an angel’s flight
At Christmas brings new faith in life.

So celebrate – or hibernate!
The holiday is just a date.
The Earth goes on, from dawn to dawn,
Without our love, without our hate.

It’s in our minds that we create
The things that bind, that separate.

Our hearts can span the distances
And understand what Christmas is.
