"Sweet Jesus!"
by Nathan Sanders

I had been reading The End of Faith by Sam Harris. In this book, the author delivers a startling analysis of the clash between reason and religion in the modern world. This book provides readers with an "historical tour" of mankind's willingness to suspend reason in favor of religious beliefs - even when these beliefs inspire the "worst of human atrocities".

I thought a lot about this book while writing my one-act play, "Sweet Jesus!". And I began to wonder - is faith always bad? What is faith - exactly? Are those who believe in the supernatural, or "intelligent design", any different from the many who do not share a particular faith and would consider themselves to be, more or less, "non-believers"? And most importantly, does faith change a person? And if so, can faith transform a person for the better instead of for the worse?

Perhaps the story of Inez Fullbright and her miraculous gastronomic creation will help put a so-called human face on the great faith debate. There are two sides to every story and Inez Fullbright certainly has a good one to tell. I hope you enjoy getting to know her. I know I did.
